The 5th Tamworth Textile Triennial, titled Residue + Response, is a distinguished national exhibition that brings together 25 artworks from talented textile artists across Australia. This triennial exhibition is renowned for its exceptional showcase of textile art and its thought-provoking themes. Curated by Dr. Carol McGregor, Residue + Response delves into the intricate connections between our histories and futures, exploring how past events and experiences influence our current values and societal norms.

Residue + Response addresses themes such as memory, identity, and transformation. The artists have used a variety of textile techniques to express their interpretations of these themes, resulting in a rich tapestry of works that resonate on multiple levels. Visitors will encounter pieces that range from traditional textile methods to innovative contemporary practices, each telling a unique story of how the past continues to shape our lives.

Curator's Vision

Curated by Dr. Carol McGregor, Residue + Response showcases the best of textile art from across the country and explores the premise of how the events of our past alter our values. For Dr. McGregor, this included some of the artists coming together through an artist exchange programme, where expertise, knowledge, and experience were shared in preparation for the exhibition.

Celebrating 50 Years of the National Fibre Art Collection

This year's triennial holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the National Fibre Art Collection, established in Tamworth in 1973. The collection was initiated by the Tamworth Arts and Crafts Society and has since evolved into a nationally significant exhibition. Local textile advocates like Sybil Orr, Ruth Blakely, and Fran West played pivotal roles in its early days, advocating for the recognition of fibre art at a time when gender roles and social traditions often relegated such practices to the domestic sphere.

National Tour

Residue + Response began its journey at the Tamworth Regional Gallery and will travel to several other locations, including Adelaide, Mildura, Wagga Wagga, Manly, Port Macquarie, Grafton, and Ipswich, over the next two years. This tour allows a broader audience to experience the exceptional quality and diversity of contemporary textile art in Australia. The exhibition highlights the Tamworth community's ongoing contribution to the field of fibre art and celebrates the artistic voices that continue to emerge from this region.

Opening Event

We invite you to join us for the exhibition opening on Wednesday, 29th May at 2:30 pm. The event will include afternoon tea and provide an opportunity to meet the curator.
